If you’ve never attempted the Whipped Backstitch the holiday season is a great time to try it out! It is such a fun beginner hand embroidery stitch and it is perfect for embroidering candy canes!
To make the Whipped Backstitch you simply first stitch a normal Backstitch (one of the easiest embroidery stitches out there!) and then you whip it : ) This part is so fun as you aren’t even really creating new stitches, you’re actually just sliding your needle and thread under and around each of those Backstitches to make it look really nice and smooth! This whipped part of this embroidery stitch is what makes for the perfect twirly candy canes. Check out this video for the stitch tutorial and then follow along with the steps below to get to stitching candy canes!
Candy Cane Stitching Steps:
For my embroidered candy canes I used traditional Christmas colors. The embroidery floss colors I used were DMC B5200 (white), DMC 355 (red), and DMC 987 (green).
- Using all six strands of DMC B5200 Backstitch the candy cane.
2. One of my favorite things to do when embroidering is to mix my embroidery floss colors as it makes stitching extra fun by watching the colors unravel : ) DMC embroidery floss is made up of six separate strands, but you don’t have to use all of them when stitching, and you can definitely mix and match by putting together various strands of embroidery floss. So for the whipped part of this stitch I combined two strands of DMC B5200 with two strands of DMC 355 to create a four strand color combination.
When mixing colors it is so fun to watch the threads lay in place as they each sit just a little different making for a really unique and one of a kind piece : )
Here’s how my first candy cane turned out! I especially love the top portion where the white embroidery floss in the mixed threads layer right in the center of the red splitting it apart. I just love the little details!
Let’s try stitching another candy cane, except this time let’s add a bit of Christmas green : )
- Using all six strands of DMC B5200 Backstitch the candy cane.
2. Combine two strands of DMC B5200 with two strands of DMC 355 and one strand of DMC 987 to create a five strand color combo. Using this combination Whip the Backstitch.
I love the subtle addition of the green! I think it turned out great.
I think from here you can see why I love color… or should I say thread mixing as the outcomes are endless! Get fun and get creative with your own candy canes and stitch them in whatever colors or combinations you can imagine!
I hope you enjoyed stitching up these candy canes. If you want some more candy cane stitching fun check out this free candy cane embroidery pattern here and put your color mixing candy canes into practice!
