This cozy hand embroidered cabin is one of my most favorite embroidery hoops I’ve ever stitched and I can’t wait to share it with you!
Follow along with these step-by-step stitching instructions to recreate this winter a-frame hoop! You can find the PDF pattern download at the bottom of this page.
Supplies Needed:
- 6 inch embroidery hoop
- White colored fabric (a cotton linen blend is my go to, but 100% cotton works great too)
- Embroidery needle
- Scissors
- Listed DMC Embroidery Floss colors
- Optional: a tiny bit of black watercolor paint to paint the windows
- Transfer Pen (I like to use the Pilot Friction Erasable Gel Pen. The ink appears black when you apply it to the fabric & once you’re done stitching you simply hit it with some heat, like a blow dryer, and all the ink disappears leaving a clean stitched hoop! This pen takes the stress off of having to achieve a picture perfect transfer.)
- Optional: wood stain of your choosing to alter the color of your embroidery hoop
- Access to a printer to print this pattern (Find the PDF pattern download at the bottom of this page)
Recommended DMC Embroidery Floss Colors:
- DMC 839
- DMC 844
- DMC 3051
- DMC 3052
- DMC 3863
- DMC 3865
Before You Start:
Before you start stitching you will need to prepare your embroidery hoop, this is quite simple, you’ll just need to-
- load your hoop with fabric
- & transfer the pattern onto your fabric. There are multiple ways to do this like using a transfer pen (The Pilot Friction Erasable Gel Pen), carbon transfer paper, stick and stitch paper, or printing the pattern onto your fabric at home using your own printer and sticky label paper. Any method will get the job done, but if you’re a beginner to hand embroidery and aren’t sure which option to choose or don’t have the supplies readily available you can totally just use a pencil and a light source, like a window or iPad screen to transfer the pattern. Once your pattern is transferred onto your fabric you are ready to start stitching!
Stitching Instructions:
Follow along with the step-by-step directions below to recreate this embroidery hoop. Each step will indicate how many strands of thread to use, the thread color to use, and the type of stitch to use. Each written stitching step corresponds with the image below it. Feel free to stitch-a-long with me over on YouTube as well!
Please Note: DMC Embroidery Floss is made up of 6 strands, you will need to split the floss accordingly. For example, if the pattern says “2 strands DMC 123,” you will cut a stretch of DMC 123 and separate 2 strands from the other 4 strands (which makes the 6 strand total). You will then stitch with just the 2 strands.
- Using black watercolor paint, paint the windows. Alternatively you could Satin Stitch these windows or leave them blank, I just like to watercolor my windows to give them a fun look : )
2. Using three strands of DMC 3863 Satin Stitch the front of the a-frame horizontally. This will be the base layer to the face of our cabin.
3. Using one strand of DMC 839 add Straight Stitches across the face of the cabin as pictured below. These Straight Stitches will act as the siding details for our cabin.
4. Using three strands of DMC 839 Satin Stitch the door vertically and then add two horizontal Straight Stitches to cap off the two ends of the door.
5. Using three strands of DMC 3863 Satin Stitch the stairs vertically.
6. Using the same 3 strands of DMC 3863 add Straight Stitches as pictured below to cap off the stairs.
7. Using three strands of DMC 844 Satin Stitch the roof diagonally and chimney vertically. Then add Straight Stitches as highlighted below to outline the windows and peak of the roof.
8. Combine two strands of DMC 3051 and two strands of DMC 3052 to create a four strand color combo. Using this color combination fill the front bush with French Knots.
9. Combine one strand of DMC 3863 with one strand of DMC 839 to create a two strand color combo. Using this color combination Satin Stitch the pile of wood. Satin Stitch some diagonally, vertically, and horizontally to add more detail to your piece : )
10. Using two strands of DMC 844 Stem Stitch the perimeter of the fire wood.
11. Combine two strands of DMC 844 with one strand of DMC 3863 to create a three strand color combo. Using this color combination Stem Stitch the wreath.
12. Using three strands of DMC 3051 add Straight Stitches around the wreath. Leave a little room for more Straight Stitches to be added in the next step with a different color.
13. Using two strands of DMC 3052 add Straight Stitches around the wreath.
14. Using three strands of DMC 3865 add French Knot Christmas lights to the bush and perimeter of the roof.
15. Using one strand of DMC 3865 add French Knots to the wreath. Sprinkle in as many or as few as you like!
18. Using three strands of DMC 839 Stem Stitch the tree trunks.
19. Using the same threads as the previous step, three strands of DMC 839, Straight Stitch the tree branches.
20. Using three strands of DMC 3051 add Straight Stitch pine needles to the trees.
21. Using two strands of DMC 3052 add more pine needle Straight Stitches to the trees.
22. Using two strands of DMC 3865 add Straight Stitches on top of some of the pine needles. This will act as the snow laying on the pines so be sure just to add these stitches on top portions of the pines : )
23. Combine one strand of DMC 844 with one strand of DMC 3865 to create a two color thread combo. Using this combination Stem Stitch the smoke coming out of the chimney.
24. Using two strands of DMC 3865 Backstitch on top of pieces of wood in the wood pile to add a layer of snow to it. This will complete your pattern!
To Back your Embroidery Hoop:
To back the hoop simply grab an extra strand of thread and use the Running Stitch to stitch around the border of the fabric that’s been hanging out of the edges of the hoop this whole time. Once you’ve made it all the way around the fabric pull on both ends of the strands of thread. This will tighten and pull your fabric together. Then you’ll want to double knot the strands together to secure it. Lastly trim the thread strands if they are too long and voila, you are done!
